Yellowjackets report: Augsburg holds off UWS in nonconference women’s hockey

Just over a minute after Byfuglien’s goal, Jenna Gerold scored an insurance goal at 2:37 in the third to give the Auggies some cushion. That’s how it would stay, as Mara McClain had 23 saves for Augsburg (3-5-1). Emily Cronkhite helped stake the Auggies to a 3-0 lead with a pair of goals.

McKenzie Whalen had 21 saves for UWS (4-5), which also got a goal late in the second period from Cora Coz to cut the deficit to 3-1 going into the third.

UWS continues nonconference play at 7 p.m. Friday, December 10, against St. Catherine at Drake Arena in St. Paul.

Brooks, Blugolds hold off Yellowjackets

Carter Brooks led a balanced effort with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks as host Wisconsin-Eau Claire held on for a 75-66 nonconference men’s basketball victory over Wisconsin-Superior before 284 at Zorn Arena.

Brock Voigt added 15 points as seven players scored at least five points apiece for the Blugolds (7-3).

J’Vaun Walker scored a game-high 22 points and Mason Ackley of Superior and Eli Vogel added 13 points apiece for the Yellowjackets (2-5), who cut the lead to three points on two occasions in the second half but could get no closer.

UWS opens UMAC play at 7:15 p.m. Friday, December 10, against Bethany Lutheran at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior.
