Minnesota Duluth couldn't complete a volleyball comeback on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, as host Southwest Minnesota State won the decisive fifth set 15-9 for a 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9) Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory in Marshall, Minnesota.

The fifth-ranked Mustangs (12-1, 4-1 NSIC) got 21 kills from Angela Young and 13 from Meg Schmidt. They served 12 aces, including five from Katelyn Nichols, who also had eight blocks.

The No. 19 Bulldogs hit better than .300 in each of the sets they won, but in the decisive frame, had more errors (five) than kills (three). SMSU, meanwhile, had nine kills against two errors in the fifth.

Cianna Selbitschka had 17 kills to lead UMD (9-4, 2-3 NSIC). Grace Daak added 13 and Grace Post 11. Daak had seven blocks. Defensively, Sydney Lanoue posted a match-best 18 digs. Madison Gordon dished out 40 assists and contributed 11 digs.

UMD hosts Minnesota State-Mankato on Friday, Oct. 1 at Romano Gym.
