The St. Scholastica volleyball team opened its season — finally — with a pair of losses to Iowa schools, 3-1 to Grinnell College and 3-0 to Loras College at the Loras Invitational Friday, Sept. 17, 2021, in Dubuque, Iowa.
Rachel Woock (16 kills), Jenna Keller (15 kills) and Olivia Jensen (14 kills) were balanced and effective on the attack in leading Grinnell (8-6) to a 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 25-16 victory over CSS in the opener. Jessica Remer had 19 kills and 14 digs to lead the Saints.
Lyndsi Wilgenbusch 15 kills and Krystal Tranel had 17 digs to lead Loras (9-1) to the 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 sweep in the second match.
Remer recorded 10 kills, giving her 29 kills between the two matches, while junior Caitlin Schneeweis, a Duluth Denfeld grad who transfered from NCAA Division II Mary, had a combined 17 kills in her first action as a Saint.
While Grinnell and Loras already had 24 matches between them, St. Scholastica had a delayed start due to COVID-19 protocols.
The Saints continue tournament play at noon Saturday against No. 15 Carthage.
