Vikings give Duluth Heritage Sports Center money for football field

The Duluth Heritage Sports Center will receive a $200,000 grant for an indoor football field from the Minnesota Vikings, the NFL Youth Football Fund and Local Initiatives Support Corp. announced.

The field will be in the arena during the non-ice season.

The grant is one of a number of field refurbishment awards awarded this year to community groups in areas surrounding the 32 NFL markets. The grants total $5.43 million.

"The Vikings are pleased that the Boys & Girls Club of Duluth will receive funds for a new field, providing a safe place for children to get active and play," said Lester Bagley, Vikings vice president of public affairs in a news release announcing the grant.

The multi-use Duluth Heritage Sports Center will house the Boys & Girls Club Outreach Center and a sports floor area.

"The residents of Lincoln Park saw the Sports Heritage Center as an integral economic and recreational opportunity in their revitalization plan," Pam Kramer, executive director of Duluth Local Initiatives Support Corp. said in the news release. "Thanks to the Minnesota Vikings and NFL, we are thrilled to have this grant contribute to the development of a multipurpose center for neighborhood and area youth."
