Vandals smashed at least eight windows late Thursday or early Friday at the former Ordean Middle School, inflicting serious damage.
The damage included four large picture-window panes in the former media center.
"Our preliminary estimate is that the damage will approach or exceed $10,000," said Kerry Leider, Duluth Public Schools' manager of facilities.
Vandals attacked sometime between 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 6:30 a.m. Friday. Leider said a golf ball was recovered on the scene.
Brad Wick, a public information officer for the Duluth Police Department, said dispatchers received a report about 12:30 a.m. Friday of a white sports utility vehicle in the vicinity of Ordean and of four people -- three males and one female -- hitting golf balls.

The damage at the school was not discovered until construction workers arrived on the scene Friday morning. Ordean has been closed this year as builders work to transform the facility into Duluth's new eastern high school.
Duluth Police have requested public assistance with the case. Anyone with information about the SUV or the vandalism at Ordean is encouraged to call the police department's property crimes unit at (218) 730-5160.
