Sophomore center Justin Faryna scored two goals Thursday night as Wisconsin-Superior upset No. 2-ranked St. Norbert College 3-0 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association men's game at Amsoil Arena.
Freshman goalie Drew Strandberg made 33 saves for the win.
The victory moved UWS (12-5-1 and 9-2) into a first-place NCHA tie with St. Norbert (15-3 and 9-2).
The Yellowjackets recorded goals 18 seconds apart in the last minute of the first period for a 2-0 lead. Senior center Logan Isley scored with 33 seconds to go and Faryna followed with 15 seconds remaining. Faryna, Superior's scoring leader, scored into an empty net with 14 seconds left in the game and has nine goals and nine assists this season. St. Norbert led in shots on goal 33-23.
St. Norbert entered the series with a four-game win streak and 13-1 mark the previous 14 games, with the last loss coming at St. Scholastica 2-1 on Dec. 4. It was the first time in 39 games that the Green Knights had been shut out. The game was played a day earlier than scheduled because of ice plant problems at Wessman Arena. UWS takes a four-game win streak into today's 2:30 p.m. rematch.
