UMD women's hockey sweeps Connecticut

The Bulldogs (5-1) have won four straight games, three straight by shutout margins. Senior goalie Kim Martin made 21 saves to earn the victory. She has two shutouts this season and 13 in her career, and has a career record of 56-18-6. Four of UMD's five wins this season have been shutouts.

Connecticut (1-6), of Hockey East, has lost five straight games and was outscored 12-0 by UMD. The Bulldogs outshot Connecticut 39-21 Sunday and 102-30 for the weekend. It was the first series meeting between the schools.

UMD led 1-0 after one period on Irwin's first goal and was up 3-0 after two. Irwin, a 2010 Olympic gold medalist with Canada who is from Thunder Bay, Ontario, has eight goals this season, with at least one goal in every game. For her career, Irwin has 53 goals and 63 assists for 116 points in 82 games.

UMD remains at home this Friday and Saturday against No. 8 Minnesota (5-2) at the DECC.
