HERMANTOWN VS. WACONIA
What:Class A state tournament quarterfinal
Where:Chisago Lakes Area High School, Lindstrom, Minn.
Records:Hermantown 12-6-2; Waconia 16-1-2
Outlook: t took the Hawksjust four games this season to match their 2012 win total of two, and the team has continued to churn out victories en route to its first state tournament since 2009, when the Hawks were runners-up in Class A. Senior forward Kori Ochs has scored 24 of Hermantown's 47 goals this season. Ochs' hat trick helped the Hawks upset No. 3 Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in the Section 7A quarterfinals. In fact, Hermantown ousted the top three seeds, including Monticello and Chisago Lakes Area, en route to the section title. In the championship game against Chisago Lakes, Siji Gonzalez tallied two goals to give him eight for the season. The sophomore attacker also has a team-leading 10 assists. The unranked Hawks, averaging just more than two goals per game, will need all the offense they can muster tonight against a team that yields just 0.57 goals per outing. Senior goalkeeper Josh Lenard has been steady all season. ... Waconiais ranked second and is making its second straight trip to state. The Wildcats were undefeated until their regular-season finale, which they lost 2-1 to Chanhassen, before winning three straight in the Section 6A playoffs. Senior Marcel Montiel is Waconia's chief scoring threat with 11 goals this season, while fellow senior James Nash produced a school-record 14 assists. Senior goalkeeper John Rogers has keyed a defense that owns 11 shutouts.
Quotable: The thing I like about our team is that, even though Kori has been our main scorer this year, I have a lot of guys playing well right now. I really believe that if they choose to try and mark up just one or two guys, that we'll have other players that will step up and do the scoring for us." -- Hermantown coach Dave Thompson
