CLOQUET-CARLTON (18-2) VS. HOLY ANGELS ACADEMY (16-2-1)
What: Class A state tournament quarterfinal
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Chisago Lakes H.S., Lindstrom, Minn.
Outlook: The unseeded Lumberjacks are back in the state tournament for the eighth time overall and first since 2012 after knocking off undefeated Chisago Lakes 3-2 in a thrilling double-overtime Section 7A final last week. Olivia Jameson, a reserve who didn’t play in regulation, scored the game-winning goal. Most of the team’s goals have come via the attacking duo of senior Kiana Bender (20 goals, 10 assists, 30 points) and sophomore Katie Turner (20-8—28), who has netted seven game-winners. Bender was named Class A first-team All-State while Turner was named to the second team. While the Lumberjacks average 3.7 goals per game, goalkeeper Gracie Meagher (0.53 goals per game, .889 save percentage in regular season) has been busy keeping the ball out of the net. … The Stars claimed the Section 3A title with a shootout victory over Visitation after a scoreless regulation and overtime periods. That avenged an earlier 5-1 loss to Visitation. The Stars’ other defeat was 2-0 to Minneapolis Washburn. This marks the Richfield-based school’s ninth state tournament appearance, which has included a 2003 title and three runners-up finishes. Junior midfielder Mia Van der Heide (12-20—32) and sophomore midfielder Cat Duffy-Shaw (8-6—14) lead the team in scoring, though the Stars average a goal per game less than Cloquet-Carlton. After splitting time in the regular season, junior Rachel Kawiecki (0.35, .923) has taken over in goal in the playoffs. The winner advances to next Monday’s semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis against either Orono or Rochester Lourdes.
