National Trails Day is Saturday, and several events are scheduled to

celebrate the day.

Here's a list:

  • The city of Duluth, the Superior Hiking Trail Association and Superior National Forest will combine to offer activities and hikes starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Enger Park. The event will include activities for children, a visit from Smoky Bear, snacks and three hikes of varying lengths. Hikes will begin at 10 a.m. Each will be led by a naturalist. All are free.

Long hike: A 7.4-mile hike will begin at Skyline Parkway and Getchell Avenue and return to Enger Park. (Hikers will be shuttled to the starting point.)

Short hike: A 1.7-mile hike will begin at Skyline Parkway and 24th Avenue West and return to Enger Park.

Kids/family hike: A half-mile hike will take place around Enger Park. Weather permitting, Smoky Bear will join this hike.

  • Biking trail work project: The city of Duluth, Hartley Nature Center and COGGS (Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores) will sponsor a trail-building project at Hartley Park from 9 a.m. to about 2 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers will construct about a quarter-mile of new trail on what is known as the Outer Loop of the Guard Rail Loop. Bring trail tools, gloves, water, bug repellent. Limited parking along the shoulder of Howard Gnesen Road, just north of Norton Road, then hike into the park. Or park at Hartley Nature Center and walk or mountain bike about two miles to work site near Howard Gnesen Road.
  • North Country National Scenic Trail: Scenic hikes, a picnic, and a new campsite dedication will take place Saturday along the North Country National Scenic Trail in northwestern Wisconsin. A two-mile hike will start at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Douglas County Wildlife Area at the Bird Sanctuary Clubhouse, four miles south of Solon Springs on U.S. Highway 53, then 3/4-mile west on County A and 3/4-mile northwest on Bird Road. At 10:30 a.m., the public is invited to gather at the Gaylord Nelson Trailhead, eight miles south of Brule on Wisconsin Highway 27, for the dedication of the Paul Schoch Campsite. The new campsite honors a Brule-St. Croix Chapter officer who disappeared while on a back-country trip in Alaska in 2007. Participants will make a two-mile round-trip hike to the new campsite, in a scenic area of the Brule Valley.

At 12:30 p.m., a potluck picnic will take place at the St. Croix Lake Trailhead, four miles northeast of Solon Springs on County Highway A. Bring a snack, side dish or dessert to share.

At 1:30 p.m., hikers can gather at the St. Croix Lake Trailhead for hikes of one to five miles through the Brule Spillway State Natural Area.
