Prep report: Suominen off to fast start in 7A meet

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton's Makayla Suominen jump-started her quest at contending for two state titles by finishing first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle preliminaries at the Section 7A swimming and diving meet Thursday night at Lincoln Middle School.

Suominen, a senior, was timed in 23.40 seconds in the 50 — 1.13 seconds better than runner-up Kate Thomasen of Two Harbors and .03 better than her runner-up finish in the 2017 Class A state meet.

Three events later she cruised to the finish in the 100 in 53.25, besting Thomasen by 17-hundredths of a second.

Suominen also anchored CEC's winning 200 freestyle relay.

Two Harbors junior Riley Larson also was first to the line in two events — the 200 and 500 freestyles — while also helping the Agates win by nearly 10 seconds in the 400 freestyle relay.

The swimming and diving finals are Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Park Middle School.
