Prep report: Section 7A meet set to begin

The top swimmers and divers from Section 7A will begin competing for a state tournament berth Thursday at Lincoln Park Middle School in Duluth.

Swimming preliminaries start at 4:30 p.m., with the diving competition being held at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by the swimming finals at 3 p.m.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton senior Makayla Suominen is Northeastern Minnesota's top swimmer, posting the top times in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles (23.74, 53.13, respectively). She finished second in the 2017 Class A state meet to Hutchinson eighth-grader Grace Hanson in the 50 and tied for third in the 100.

Two Harbors/Silver Bay is deep with excellent relays, with junior Kaylee Overby posting the area's top times in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.

• Duluth East begins a three-day run Thursday in the Section 7AA meet at Northdale Middle School in Coon Rapids, Minn.
