Superior quarterback Nick Mehlum threw for 341 yards and five touchdowns to lead Superior to a 35-28 victory over third-ranked Hudson in its Big Rivers Conference opener Friday at Spartan Sports Complex.

Nick Holm tied the game at 28 for Hudson with a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter. Mehlum responded with a 55-yard touchdown throw to Beau Girard with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game to give the lead back to Superior (2-1, 1-0).

Dayton Diemel rushed for 127 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns to lead Hudson.

Zach Gerlach ran for two touchdowns and returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown as the visiting Lumberjacks cruised to the Sea-Range Conference shutout.

Gerlach opened the scoring with a 9-yard run and closed the first-half scoring with a 43-yard jaunt before running back the second-half kick for Cloquet (2-0, 1-0).

Jeremy Stephan ran in a 56-yard touchdown in the first quarter and Joe Hansen ran 65 yards for a TD in the third quarter to lead the host Hilltoppers to a nonconference victory.

Hansen’s first rushing touchdown came in the second quarter to put Marshall ahead 14-0.

Cullen Mudrak ran in a 3-yard TD in the second quarter, then scored again from 6-yards out and ran in the ensuing two-point conversion for a 28-0 Marshall lead.

Senior quarterback John Solberg ran for four touchdowns and hit Evan Dunbar for a 32-yard TD pass and the host Bluejackets handed the Greyhounds their second straight shutout loss in the Mississippi 8 Conference game.

East fell behind 20-0 in the first quarter, with senior running back Eli Iglesias rushing 69 yards for the first of six Bluejackets touchdowns.

Jake Dubla, a sophomore linebacker, led the Greyhounds with 16 tackles.

Junior wide receiver Stephon Buckanan caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from senior running back Demetri Nordgaard in the fourth quarter to move the Eagles past the host Bombers in a Great Polar Red game.

Nordgaard ran for 119 yards on 13 carries. He opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 25-yard TD run.

Barnum trailed 13-0 before senior tight end Mitchell Weller ran in a 5-yard touchdown before halftime. Sophomore fullback Colton Ziegler’s 1-yard TD run and his reception from junior quarterback Hunter Lake on the two-point conversion in the third quarter gave the Bombers a 1-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Deer River junior quarterback Aaron Drotts threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 88 yards and another score to lead the Warriors over the Giants in a nonconference game at Aurora.

Drotts’ 45-yard run opened up an eight-point lead in the third quarter and Iain Belgrade caught Drotts’ second touchdown of the night to salt away the win for Deer River.

Travis Hooper returned two punt returns for touchdowns and ran in two more scores to help North Woods improve to 2-0 in the Big North Conference.

Hooper returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter after running in from 10 yards to help the Grizzlies build a 22-0 first-quarter lead. He added a 14-yard score in the second quarter and returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Sophomore quarterback Zion Smith threw four touchdown passes to push the Cardinals to 2-0 overall and in the Great Northern Conference.

Smith completed a 22-yard TD pass to Brandon Fairbanks and a 4-yarder to Austin Pfisthner, plus ran in a two-point conversion in the first quarter to erase an 8-0 deficit and give Cromwell a 14-8 lead. Smith also hit Pfisthner from 10 yards out and Fairbanks for 3 yards in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 34-8 at halftime.

Josh Heiman led with 95 yards rushing while scoring on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Wyatt Conaway also scored in the second from 9 yards out and finished with 89 yards total. Sophomore running back Braxton Casey scored on an 11-yard run.
