ST. PAUL -- A disastrous second period leaves the Hermantown Hawks in a massive hole this afternoon at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, where the Hawks trail East Grand Forks 5-1 in the Class A title game of the Minnesota high school boys hockey tournament.
Hermantown, seeded second and trying to avoid its fifth straight championship-game letdown, started the scoring at the end of the first period on a Scott Wasbotten goal.
But it's been all Green Wave since as top-seeded East Grand Forks ripped one goal after another past Hawks goalie Adam Smith. East Grand Forks scored all five of its goals in the second period.
The Green Wave, who outshot Hermantown 15-6 in the second, are now just 17 minutes away from their first state championship.
