Determan, Luther shut down Saints
First-team all-region pitcher Lexy Determan didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning as Luther College of Iowa beat St. Scholastica 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Thursday at Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wis.
Determan struck out 17 to earn her 22nd victory of the season.
Theresa Tauer got St. Scholastica's first hit with a line shot off the pitcher in the top of the seventh inning, and then Tiffany Hudack followed with a double to put runners on second and third before Determan got two strikeouts to end the game.
Pitcher Darcy Roach scattered six hits in a solid outing for the Saints (28-14), while Abby Christian had three hits and an RBI for the top-seeded Norse (38-4).

St. Scholastica, which is playing in its second NCAA tournament, plays North Central College of Illinois in an elimination game at 11 a.m. today, while Luther plays
Wisconsin-La Crosse in a winners' bracket game at 4 p.m.
