Neuenfeldt’s triple sparks Gusties in opener.

Gustavus downed St. Scholastica 5-4 in the nine-inning opener and then cruised to a 6-1 victory in the rematch in a nonconference softball doubleheader Monday before 47 at Kenwood Field in Duluth.

Gustavus took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning of game one on Kayla Ruud’s two-run single before CSS came back to tie it in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles by Aislind Dail and Haley Rosenthal to force extras. That set the stage for Ashley Neuenfeldt, who tripled down the right-field line to score Ruud with the winning run in the top of the ninth inning. CSS had won its last five extra-inning games.

Gustavus starting pitcher Piper Otto scattered six hits, striking out four, walking three and only allowing one run over seven innings to win the rematch. Ruud had two hits, a run and two RBIs, Allie Skuza had three hits and Mackenzie Skuza had a two-run homer to lead the Gusties (17-17). Olivia Howe had three hits, including a solo home run to lead the Saints (32-6) as she reached base in eight of her nine plate appearances on the day. Dail, meanwhile, has reached base in 21 straight games.

It was the first meeting between the two programs in Duluth.
