Minnesota Duluth opened the season with a pair of splits in college softball Friday and Saturday at the Maverick Sports Dome in Mankato, Minnesota.
In Friday’s opener, UMD lost the first game 9-4 to Concordia-St. Paul before bouncing back to win the second game 3-0. Emma Frost had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs as the Bulldogs led 4-0 in the opener, but it was all Golden Bears after that. In the rematch, Lauren Dixon tossed a six-hitter with seven strikeouts, Jessica Bren had three hits and Lauren Oberle had a solo home run to lead UMD.
On Saturday, UMD downed hosts Minnesota State-Mankato 5-2 before falling 4-3 in the rematch. Oberle cranked a two-run home run to lead the Bulldogs in the first game against the Mavericks, while freshman Kiana Bender of Cloquet had a hit and two RBIs. Minnesota State rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to deny UMD the sweep, capped by Sydney Nielsen’s game-winning RBI single.
Jordyn Thomas of Hermantown, Sidney Zavoral and Kat Burkhardt all had doubles to lead the Bulldogs (2-2).
