College softball: Bren pounds four homers in UMD sweep
Minnesota Duluth's Jessica Bren had as perfect of an afternoon as possible as the sophomore designated player went 5-for-5 with four home runs and nine RBIs in an NSIC doubleheader sweep over Upper Iowa on Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.
Bren was 4-for-4 with three homers and seven RBIs in an 11-4 win in the opener. She hit a solo homer in the first inning, a three-run shot in the second and a two-run blast in the fifth, in addition to a run-scoring double in the fourth.
Jordyn Thomas also homered and doubled with three RBIs to support winning pitcher Sam Pederson.
The Bulldogs (26-17 overall, 17-8 NSIC) scored seven runs in the first inning of an 8-0, six-inning win in the nightcap. Sammi Sadler and Emma Frost each had two hits to aid Breanna Swint's two-hitter, while Bren walked twice before ending matters against the Peacocks (21-18, 13-11) with a solo shot in the sixth.
• Gabby Gidley had four of Wisconsin-Superior's 16 hits to lead the Yellowjackets to a 14-2, five-inning win over North Central to complete a UMAC sweep at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Amelia Leger had two hits and three RBIs, while Bailey Armstrong was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to back Damara Theis' six-hitter.
Duluth's Ashley Taipale tossed a six-inning two-hitter and struck out 10 in a 9-1 win in the opener as Armstrong totaled four hits and four others had two hits apiece for the Yellowjackets (15-15, 12-0), who kept their lead atop the conference with the sweep of the Rams (3-25, 1-9).
