College softball: UMD splits with Northern State
Hannah Bloch singled in two runs in the second inning and another during a three-run fifth to lead Minnesota Duluth to a 5-4 win over Northern State in the first game of an NSIC doubleheader Wednesday at Aberdeen, S.D.
The Wolves turned the tables in the second game, winning 5-4.
Sam Pederson recorded the win in the opener, improving to 11-4 by scattering seven hits and striking out three. She received last-inning help from Breanna Swint, who picked up her second save by stranding the tying run at second base.
The Wolves (13-23 overall, 5-9 NSIC) ended UMD's nine-game winning streak in the nightcap, helped by two home runs. Madison Rutter homered in the second inning and Kaitlyn King smacked a three-run homer in the third.
UMD (20-13, 11-3) also hit a pair of homers, with Lauren Oberle going deep in the third and Jessica Bren drilling a two-run shot in the fifth.
Swint tossed a seven-hitter in the loss.
