Both the Wisconsin-Superior men and women are picked to win the UMAC soccer titles according to the preseason coaches’ polls released this week.
The UWS men were a unanimous selection with 49 points and seven first-place votes, with Bethany Lutheran second with 43 points and Northland third with 34.
The Yellowjackets have dominated the conference the last three seasons, winning their third consecutive regular season title in the shortened spring season and a fourth straight postseason title. They return Blake Perry, a three-time All-UMAC forward who had 13 goals in the spring. First Team UMAC selection Protus Babaya is back after tallying six goals as is UMAC defensive player of the year Scott Wilson.
The UWS women are picked to win their first UMAC women’s soccer title after collecting 46 points and five first-place votes, with Minnesota-Morris second with 43 points and two first-place votes and Northwestern third with 40 points and one first-place vote.
The Yellowjackets finished as conference runner-up last spring and have shown steady improvement under fifth-year head coach Allison DeGroot and return all but two players.
Among those returners is senior goalie Morgan Philliber, the UMAC defensive player of the year honor after posting a 1.00 goals-against average last spring. Three-time All-UMAC forward Annah Schussman and Second Team pick Niya Wilson, a Superior High School grad, are also back.
