Maren Friday scored three goals in a 13-minute span of the first half and tacked on two more second-half goals in Duluth Marshall’s 11-0 home win over Hibbing-Chisholm in a Section 7A girls soccer first-round playoff game Tuesday.

The second-seeded Hilltoppers (11-1) scored goals in four consecutive minutes to set up a quarterfinal matchup against Duluth Denfeld at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Hunters defeated North Lakes Academy 6-2.

Cloquet-Carlton 11, Mesabi East Area 0

Brenna Mattson and Katie Turner scored two goals apiece in the top-seeded Lumberjacks’ first-round home win.

Hermantown, a 4-2 winner over North Branch, is next up for Cloquet-Carlton at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Esko 1, Proctor 0

Mallory Sunnarborg scored the lone goal in the 56th minute and the host Eskomos allowed only one shot on goal to win the 7A first-round game.

Esko will travel to Zimmerman, a 2-1 winner over Two Harbors, in Thursday’s quarterfinal round.


CEC 11, Hibbing-Chisholm 0

Freshman Elijah Aultman tallied five times to give him 20 goals this season in the host Lumberjacks’ 7A first-round win.

Drake Schramm added three goals to keep him ahead of Aultman among Northland goal-scoring leaders with 21.

PACT 2, Duluth Marshall 1

Kevin Sheen’s 51-minute goal broke a 1-1 deadlock and gave the Ramsey, Minnesota-based team the first-round win.


Esko 3, Hermantown 0

Gabby Martenson totaled 22 kills and Taiya Gregg added 18 in the visiting Eskomos’ marathon 25-17, 25-14, 31-33, 17-25, 15-12 nonconference victory.

Kennedy Barrett recorded an astounding 89 set assists for the Hawks.

Proctor 3, Duluth Denfeld 2

Aubrey Garner led a balanced attack with 11 kills as the Rails held off the Hunters 25-18, 18-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-10 in a Lake Superior Conference match.

Cloquet 3, Duluth East 1

Brenna McClarey’s 16 kills paced the Lumberjacks to the narrow 21-25, 28-26, 25-23, 26-24 nonconference win.

Natalie Goetzman, who helped the Greyhounds sneak past Elk River in the Section 7AA tennis final earlier in the day, had 17 digs.
