Luther College ended Wisconsin-Superior's hopes of reaching the final 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament with a 4-1 penalty-kick shootout win Sunday in Decorah, Iowa.
With the game tied 1-1 after regulation and after two scoreless overtime sessions, it went to penalty kicks.
After each team made its first attempt, Luther made its next two attempts against UWS backup goalkeeper Ulrik Lager, while Norse goalie Carson Davenport stopped Eric Watson, the UMAC Offensive Player of the Year, and then Scott Wilson for a 3-1 lead.
Luther sealed the victory on Harry Merz’s successful kick.
Luther College took a 1-0 lead on Will Overberg’s goal 22:13 into the game.
UWS tied it up when Wilson put home Blake Perry’s corner kick with 4:01 remaining.
Despite playing a man short because of a red card with five minutes remaining in the first half, Luther outshot UWS 8-2 in shots on goal.
Dalton VonKaenel finished with seven saves and Davenport had one.
