College women's soccer: UWS falls in UMAC final
Samantha Colombo, a senior from Two Harbors, needed just two saves to earn the shutout as Northwestern ended Wisconsin-Superior's Cinderella run with a 2-0 victory in the UMAC tournament championship match Saturday in St. Paul.
Emily Currie opened the scoring on an assist by Linley Norman at 59:32, with R.J. Mullin scoring on an assist by Alexis Albrecht nine minutes later.
That's all Colombo needed as she earned her second straight tournament shutout and eighth of the season. The second-seeded Eagles (11-6-4) claimed their first postseason title since 2010, earning the conference's automatic qualifier and second berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.
Freshman goalkeeper Madison Gutekunst had 10 saves to lead fourth-seeded UWS (8-11-3), which had its streak of six straight shutouts snapped.
