College women's soccer: UWS advances on penalty kicks
Claire Smith drilled home a penalty kick in the sixth round and goalkeeper Madison Gutekunst stopped a subsequent Minnesota-Morris attempt to give Wisconsin-Superior a 5-4 victory over the Cougars in a UMAC tournament play-in game Monday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Yellowjackets (7-10-3) advance to the UMAC semifinals and a meeting against top-seeded St. Scholastica at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Saints Field.
After a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, UWS and Morris (6-10-1) headed to a shootout.
Sarah Fjeran connected on UWS' first effort and teammates Emily Roe, Erin Schoborg and Mackenzie Dahl converted as the five rounds of penalty kicks ended tied at 4-4.
Enter Smith, who beat Cougars goalie Bailey Tschida, for the go-ahead goal.
Gutekunst, who made nine saves, ended matters by stopping a shot from Megan Ellingboe.
