Shootout at the DECC: UMD wins

Minnesota Duluth's mastery of Wisconsin continued at the DECC on Sunday afternoon in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association women's game that goes into the books officially as a 3-3 overtime tie.

The Bulldogs won the first women's shootout in DECC history 2-0, getting goals from linemates Sara O'Toole and Laura Fridfinnson against Wisconsin senior goalie Jessie Vetter. That gave the Bulldogs four conference points in the series.

The top-ranked Badgers (18-1-3 and 12-1-3 WCHA) are 1-1-2 against UMD this season, while the Bulldogs lead the series 4-1-2 the past seven games including 4-0 wins Friday and in the 2008 NCAA Division I title game at the DECC.

UMD scoring leader Elin Holmlov, a junior winger from Sweden, had two goals and an assist Sunday (all in the second period) and was named the game's No. 1 star. She has 16 goals and15 assists for 31 points in18 games this season.

The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs (13-6-3 and 8-5-3) trailed 1-0, then scored three second-period goals for a 3-1 lead. Wisconsin rallied to tie it on third-period goals from Jasmine Giles (power play) and right winger Hilary Knight (shorthanded), who leads Division I with 23 goals.

After a scoreless overtime, UMD goalie Kim Martin stopped Wisconsin's Knight and Kelly Nash in the shootout. UMD led in total shots on goal 38-37.

Wisconsin's most one-sided losses of the past seven years have come against UMD, including a 7-2 loss during the 2002-03 season in Madison.

Minnesota leads the WCHA with 30 points and now has the longest unbeaten streak among Division I women with 14 straight wins. Wisconsin is second in the league with 28 points and UMD third with 20.

After the longest home stand in program history,10 games over nearly two months, the Bulldogs are on the road this Friday and Saturday at Minnesota State Mankato. UMD was 7-2-1 on the home stand.
