Chisholm musher Nathan Schroeder was running in 18th place in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race as of Friday night.

Schroeder took his required 24-hour rest at the Galena checkpoint - 396 miles into the 979-mile race from Fairbanks to Nome - and left at 12:17 p.m. Alaska time Friday, according to the race website. He left on the 82-mile leg to Huslia with a team of 12 dogs, after having dropped four so far.

Schroeder still must take an eight-hour required rest before reaching Nome. The three-time John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon champion is competing in his second Iditarod.

The first musher to arrive in Huslia was race veteran Aaron Burmeister of Nome, who reached the village at 9:47 p.m. Thursday; he had yet to take either of his required rests. Trailing him by about two hours was defending champion Dallas Seavey, who has taken an eight-hour rest.

Seventy-five of the 78 mushers who started the race remain on the trail.
