St. Scholastica pitcher Adian Kummet was selected by the Cincinnati Reds today in the 31st round of the Major League Baseball draft, becoming the second Saints player ever drafted in the majors.
Kummet did not have to wait long on the third and final day of the draft as he was the eighth player taken and 929th overall. Kummet was the 10th NCAA Division III player chosen.
The only other Saints player drafted was Brett Nyquist (2000-2002) by the Montreal Expos in the 13th round of the 2002 draft. Leland Swenson (1997-2000) signed a post-draft contract with the Texas Rangers.
Kummet was named a second-team American Baseball Coaches Associa-tion (ABCA) All-American and a D3baseball.com honorable mention All-American this spring. He finished 10th in the nation with a 1.87 ERA, fifth with 5.77 hits allowed per nine innings and 14th with 11.39 strikeouts per nine innings. He had with 73 strikeouts in 57 2/3 in-nings.
He is tied for second in program history with 24 victories and fifth with 215 strikeouts.
