Red Corvettes start 1-1-1 at national tournament

The Duluth-based Red Corvettes opened play at the North American Fastpitch Association 18U Northern National Tournament in Chaska, Minn., with a win, loss and tie.

The Red Corvettes, an all-star team with players from around the Northland, lost 6-3 to the Omaha (Neb.) Echos on Thursday in Gold Division play, but they rebounded on Friday with a 2-2 tie with the Mankato Peppers and a 14-3 victory over previously undefeated Silver Fusion (Sioux Falls, S.D.)

Against the Fusion, Vanessa Kohl was the winning pitcher, while Sydney Helmbrecht was 2-for-3 with three runs and Olivia Santee was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs.

The Corvettes begin double-elimination bracket play today, opening with the Winnipeg Terminators at 9:30 a.m.
