After taking 2020 off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lutsen 99er mountain bike race returned last weekend with approximately 2,000 racers at Lutsen Ski Resort.
Stephen Hyde, 34, of Easthampton, Massachusetts, and Raylyn Nuss, 30, of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri, won the weekend's 99-mile main event that runs through the Sawtooth Mountains and Boreal Forest.
Hyde posted a winning time of 5 hours, 34 minutes, 46 seconds in the men's division to beat 18-year-old Ryan Sellner of Circle Pines, Minnesota, who crossed the finish line in 5:35:16.
Nuss posted a time of 6:00:46 to beat out Anna Luckow, 28, of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, by just over 35 minutes.
The Lutsen 99er event also features three shorter distance races. Winners are as follows:
69-mile division: Women — Emily Flynn, 40, Cazenovia, New York, 4:50:02. Men — Gordon Hilleque, 43, Minneapolis, 4:24:46.
49-mile: Women — Samantha Klepperich, 18, Chaska, Minnesota, 3:10:06. Men — Chase Sams, 17, Duluth, 2:49:57.
25 mile: Women — Dorothea Kramer, 15, Duluth, 1:37:35; Eyob Yore, 13 Minneapolis, 1:30:12.
