Minnesota Vikings fullback C.J. Ham looks on before the start of an NFL preseason game against San Francisco 49ers in August in Minneapolis. On Thursday, March 23, 2023, the team announced it had signed Ham, a Duluth native, to a two-year contract extension.

EAGAN, Minn. -- If some of the moves the Minnesota Vikings have made this offseason are any indication, it’s clear they are investing in the running game.

After signing free agent tight end Josh Oliver — among the best blockers in the NFL at his position — the Vikings quietly agreed to a contract extension with longtime fullback C.J. Ham this week. Both moves signal a commitment to the ground game, as does bringing back running back Alexander Mattison on a 2-year, $7 million contract.

Ham’s agency Team IFA announced on Twitter that it will be a two-year contract extension. The move will likely lower the $3.8 million cap hit previously attached to Ham and give the Vikings some financial flexibility moving forward.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D., Ham has played in 96 games with the Vikings. The Duluth native also has become a fan favorite. Though he saw his usage dip in the first season under head coach Kevin O’Connell, Ham still proved to be an integral player on special teams.

Now that he has a contract extension under his belt, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Vikings use Ham a little more in the offense next season.
