Prep report: McClure books hat trick in a flash for Denfeld

Both Hermantown and Warroad won big going into their 1-vs.-2 matchup Saturday in Hermantown.

DULUTH — Duluth Denfeld's Cooper McClure managed to fit a hat trick into the space of a single major penalty on Friday in a 7-0 Hunters win over Dodge County at Essentia Health Duluth Heritage Center.
McClure had already scored once and the Hunters were up 2-0 when Dodge County, the 2021 Class A state finalists, took a major penalty for boarding at 5:55. Not all three goals McClure scored were on the power play (the second of the period and third of the game was in a 4-on-4 situation), but he put the Hunters ahead 5-0 before the Wildcats returned to full strength.
Andy Larson had a goal and four assists and Kaden Postal scored twice for Denfeld (12-4).
Austin Wick made 20 saves for the shutout.

Hermantown 8, St. Cloud Cathedral 0

Zam Plante had two goals and an assist in his first game in over a month as the Hawks dominated in St. Cloud.
Kade Kohanski scored twice and Max Plante totaled a pair of assists.
Top-ranked Hermantown meets No. 2 Warroad, a 16-0 winner over Crookston Friday, Saturday at Hermantown Arena.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Grand Rapids/Greenway 4, Elk River/Zimmerman 2

Mercury Bischoff earned her sixth hat trick of the season and second in four days as the Lightning held off the Elks in Elk River.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Northwestern 72, Cameron 42

The Tigers scored the last 20 points of the first half and cruised to victory in a Heart O'North Conference game in Maple.
Tieryn Plasch made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Two Harbors 56, Cromwell-Wright 51

Trent Gomez (29 points) scored more than half of his team's total as the 7-3 Agates grabbed a road victory in Cromwell.
