Prep report: Duluth Marshall boys runners-up at state meet

Cloquet improved to fifth in the AA standings.

Duluth Marshall held position in the standings at the state Class A boys golf tournament on Wednesday, finishing the two-day event with a team total of 662 (333-329).

The Hilltoppers were four shots better on day two of the A meet, at Pebble Creek in Becker, Minnesota, but leaders Fertile-Beltrami raised their game to more than match it. Their Wednesday total of 309 was 20 better than any other team and they finished champions by 30 shots.

Among individuals, Hilltopper Noah Scullard-Bender finished third, two shots behind medalist Cole Witherow of New Life Academy of Woodbury, who carded twin 1-over 73's. Fertile-Beltrami's Rylin Petry had the low round of the day, shooting 72 to finish second at 3-over 147. Scullard-Bender shot 73-75. Tucker D'Allaird of Marshall joined Scullard-Bender in the top five, shooting 75 to finish in a three-way tie for fifth at plus-10.

Legacy Christian Academy won the girls' title at 716 led by medalist Emily Brandt (81-84).

  • After persevering through a rocky start in the opening round of the Class AA state tournament, Cloquet's group of six returned to form on day two with a bounce-back effort to place fifth among the eight teams at the event Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course in Jordan.

    In total, Cloquet shaved 23 strokes off its team score from day one with five of its six members posting improved scores. For the two-day event, the ‘Jacks finished with an overall score of 641 (332-309).

Junior Karson Patten carded the best score for Cloquet for a second day in a row after finishing with an even-par 72. Patten’s overall total of 149 (77-72-149) put him in a tie for sixth place among the 85 golfers in contention.

Senior Jacob Walsh was the next-best individual finisher among the six Cloquet players, tied for 33rd after finishing with a two-day total of 160 (82-78-160).

Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa held off Holy Family Catholic to win the team title by four shots, 616-620. Sam Udovich of St. Croix Lutheran Academy shot 1-under 71 in both rounds to finish as medalist.

Lake City won the girls title by 39 shots after a final round shortened due to darkness. Perham's Mallory Belka was the medalist by a three-shot margin. Hermantown's Callie Showalter was the top local finisher, tied for 37th.
