Prep report: Northwestern’s Plasch scores 28 in win over Hayward

MAPLE — Northwestern senior Tieryn Plasch scored 28 points in a 54-46 win over Hayward Friday.

The Tiger defense was key early, holding the Hurricanes to 20 first-half points.

Plasch was the only Northwestern player in double figures, but Shana Wick scored nine and Gabby Risley scored seven for the Tigers.

Maekayla Cadotte scored 12 to lead Hayward.

Wrenshall 71, Silver Bay 41

Wrenshall’s Janae Sjodin recorded a double-double with 38 points and 11 rebounds in a 71-51 home win over Silver Bay Friday.

Sjodin wasn’t the only Wren with a double-double. Abbie Resberg scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Wrenshall.

Danika Thompson scored 30 in the loss for the Mariners.

Moose Lake/Willow River 53, East Central 37

Lilly Petty scored 16 points in the Rebels’ 53-37 win over East Central.

MLWR’s defense was stout in both against the Eagles, allowing 18 points in the first half and 19 in the second.

Maci Kukuk and Hannah Roach joined Petty in double figures. Kukuk scored 13 points and Roach had 11.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Duluth Marshall 81, North Woods 68

The Hilltoppers scored 45 first-half points to cruise to a home win over North Woods Friday.

Jasper Timm led all scorers with 33 points for Duluth Marshall and freshman Brooks Johnson scored 16.

T.J. Chiabotti scored 18 in the loss for the Grizzlies.

Superior 100, Cloquet 47

The Spartans scored 50 in each half in a blowout win at Cloquet Friday.

Robert Olson scored 32 points in the win and 12 Superior players scored in the rout.

Conner Barney scored 21 to lead the Lumberjacks.

Moose Lake/Willow River 71, South Ridge 43

Moose Lake/Willow River’s Logan Orvedahl and Sam Dewey each hit three 3-pointers to lead the Rebels to a 71-43 win over South Ridge Friday. Orvedahl scored 19 points to lead all scorers and Dewey scored 11.

The Rebel offense sputtered in the first half, scoring just 26 points, but came to life in the second. MLWR outscored the Panthers 45-24 in the second half.

Austin Josephson led South Ridge with 14 points.

BOYS HOCKEY

Maple Grove 8, Grand Rapids 4

Both Joshua Giuliani and Finn Brink had five-point games as the visiting Crimson took it to the Thunderhawks at the IRA Civic Center, including four goals in the first 9:52 of the second period.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Hibbing/Chisholm 3, Duluth 1

Julia Gherardi had a natural hat trick for the Bluejackets, who returned to the .500 mark at 11-11-2.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 1, Chisago Lakes 0

Marina Dostal’s first-period goal held up with help from 17 saves by Araya Kiminski. Kiminski recorded her fourth shutout in five games and has allowed one goal on 66 shots in that span.
