Prep boys hockey: Defending state champion Hermantown selected to participate in Hockey Day Minnesota 2023

Perennial Class A power to take on Mahtomedi in annual State of Hockey classic.

ST. PAUL — The defending state champion Hermantown boys hockey team has been selected to play in Hockey Day Minnesota Jan. 28, 2023, in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, according to tweets Thursday by Bally Sports North, which will air live coverage beginning at 9 a.m.

The annual State of Hockey celebration kicks off with Stillwater taking on White Bear Lake at 9:30 a.m. in a Class AA girls contest followed by the Hawks against Mahtomedi at 1 p.m. in a matchup of Class A boys hockey powers.

In the third game of the day, Hill Murray takes on White Bear Lake at 4:30 p.m. and the Buffalo Sabres play the Minnesota Wild at 7:30 p.m. in an NHL game at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Hermantown played host to Hockey Day 2010 when above-average temperatures and freezing rain threatened to cancel the event.
