Prep reports: Mullen leads Hermantown to trio of victories

The Hawks (15-2) defeated Lakeville South 7-3 as Mullen struck out 12 and scattered six hits in the opener, then edged North St. Paul 2-1 as Mullen threw a four-hitter and struck out 10. Sam Downey's RBI triple scored the first run in the first inning and Janae Baron's solo home run in the seventh provided the difference against the Polars.

In the championship game, a 3-1 win over Maple Grove, Mullen pitched a three-hitter, whiffed eight and broke a 1-1 tie with a game-winning RBI in the seventh.

Duluth Marshall 7, Hill City 0

Steph Carlson tossed a one-hitter and struck out 13 as the Hilltoppers won the championship game of the Lakeview Christian Academy tournament at Wade Field.

  • Carlson allowed just three hits and registered 12 strikeouts in a 5-3 first-round win over LCA. Losing pitcher Anna Broman struck out 12 and threw a four-hitter.

    The Trojans downed International Falls 6-4, Eveleth-Gilbert 14-4 and Silver Bay 7-1 to share the title of the Grand Rapids Roundup with the host school. Grand Rapids beat Silver Bay 4-3, Eveleth-Gilbert 14-4 in six innings and Hibbing 8-0.

    Darryl Hansen had three hits and drove in six runs as the Vikings boosted their record to 13-2 with the five-inning nonconference win at Grand Marais.

    Denfeld, East win

    Trojan invite

    The Duluth Denfeld boys, led by two-event winner Quiton Coleman (200 meters, 300 hurdles) and three relay champions, won the Trojan Invitational on Friday at Duluth Central.

    Duluth East won the girls competition despite not having a multiple individual winner. Denfeld sophomore Paige Stratioti won three events (200, 400, triple jump), while Duluth Central's Shauna Wrazidlo (300 hurdles, pole vault) and Carlton's Lindsey Dahl-Holm (3,200, high jump) won two events each.
