Prep report: Young scores 24 points to lead Lumberjacks over Eskomos in season opener

Senior forward gets season off to great start in Esko.

Senior forward Madelynn Young’s game-high 24 points helped guide Cloquet to a 68-54 win over host Esko in their high school girls basketball opener Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021.

Junior guard Alexa Snesrud joined Young in reaching double-digits in scoring for the Lumberjacks with 18 points in the win. The Eskomos were led by senior guard Jayden Karppinen, who poured in 19 points. Sophomore Kyra Johnson added 14.

Duluth Denfeld 57, Silver Bay 46

Alyssa Grammer (15 points), Selah Reinertsen (14) and Thais Vicens DeLaFlor (13) all scored in double figures to lead the host Hunters, who led 31-15 at halftime.

Danika Thompson scored 25 points and Izzy Carey added 15 points to lead the Mariners.

Virginia 79, Greenway 42

Rian Aune scored 18 points as the Blue Devils rolled to the home victory.

Anna Fink added 14 points while Maija Lamppa chipped in 12 points for Virginia, which led 43-22 at the break.

Jadin Saville scored 19 points to lead the Raiders.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Hudson 57, Superior 51

Superior had an early lead and got 21 points from Evan Bennett, but couldn't stop Hudson inside down the stretch in falling to 1-1.

PREP BOYS HOCKEY

Greenway 4, Rock Ridge 3

Brant Tiedeman scored the first goal in Rock Ridge boys hockey history, but after the Wolverines fought back from 3-0 down to tie the game with 5:08 to play, Carter Cline put the Raiders ahead for good at Hodgins-Berardo Arena in Coleraine.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 4, Hibbing-Chisholm 3

Carter Salo and Carson Young scored in the third period as the Lumberjacks grabbed their first win of the season.

Grand Rapids/Greenway 4, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 1

Freshman Mercury Bischoff had a hat trick as the Lightning ran their record to 5-1 with a win at the IRA Civic Center.
