Virginia seniors Hailey Slatten and Katie Kingston teamed to win the Section 7A high school girls tennis doubles title on Tuesday in Virginia.
The Blue Devils defeated teammates Samantha Silcox, a senior, and Taylor Gunderson, a sophomore, 6-4, 6-0 in the finals.
In the singles championship, Foley sophomore Abby Kantor stopped Virginia ninth-grader Brylee Seitz 6-4, 6-2.
The finalists advance to the Minnesota Class A tournament starting Oct. 27 at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
In the Section 7AA tournament, Northeastern Minnesota was shut out of the state tournament. Andover junior Faith Lee defeated Elk River junior Michaela Schulz in the singles final 6-3, 6-0 at Duluth's Arrowhead Tennis Center, while Elk River seniors Camille Kraljic and Catherine O'Connell beat Forest Lake senior Jackie Unger and sophomore Taylor Shortly in the doubles final 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

The Class AA state tournament opens Oct. 27 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Grand Rapids, Mesabi East victorious
The Grand Rapids girls and Mesabi East boys won team titles in Tuesday's Iron Range Conference Championships at Hoyt Lakes Golf Course.
Grand Rapids sophomore Erin Baker was first in the girls 4,000-meter race in 15 minutes, 34 seconds and eighth-grade teammate JayLynn Lauer was second in 15:45.
Mesabi East senior Drew Johnson won the boys 5,000-meter race in 17:18 and Grand Rapids junior Colin Cottingham was second in 17:36.

Esko-Carlton wins in shootout

Esko-Carlton downed Hermantown 2-1 in a shootout as Hillary Anderson and Tori Zime scored goals in the Section 7A semifinal in Hermantown.
Sami Hanson scored in the 21st minute to put Hermantown up 1-0 before Caitlin Lilly's goal in the 56th minute forced overtime. It was Lilly's 24th goal of the season.
Rachel Ofstie had eight saves to lead Esko-Carlton (12-5-1) while Courtney Simmons had 18 saves to lead Hermantown (11-6-2). The Hawks had beaten Esko-Carlton 3-2 and tied 1-1 during the regular season.
Esko-Carlton advances to play at Chisago Lakes Area, which advanced with a 3-0 win over Duluth Denfeld, at 7 p.m. Thursday in the championship.

Ebony Gray had eight kills, 10 digs and six blocks as the Bluejackets reclaimed the Iron Range Conference Championship with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-23 victory after losing it a year ago.

Jessica Lindstrom had 14 kills as the Spartans finished Lake Superior Conference play unbeaten with the home victory.
Superior (25-6-1 overall, 7-0 LSC) opens the Wisconsin Division 1 playoffs on Thursday vs. Antigo.
Hermantown 3, Cloquet 2
Steph Kallberg had 15 kills as the Hawks secured second place in the Lake Superior Conference with the home victory.
Carmen Bergstedt added 13 kills and Kayla Anderson had 22 set assists for Hermantown (21-5 overall, 5-1 LSC), while Alex Oakes had 27 set assists and six kills for Cloquet (15-11, 4-2).
