Virginia senior Andy Sederlund shot a par 72 to tie for fourth Tuesday in the first round of the Minnesota Class AA high school boys golf state tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
Sederlund’s total leaves him three shots behind Delano sophomore Austin vanSytzama, whose 69 gives him a two-stroke advantage over another pair of sophomores - Mankato East’s Carter Haley and Staples- Motley’s Andrew Israelson - heading into today’s final 18 holes.
Sederlund, who shot 34-38, is tied with five other golfers. The Virginia / Mountain Iron-Buhl team is in sixth place after totaling 315 strokes. Providence Academy is six shots ahead of Mankato East in Class AA.
- In the Class A boys tournament at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Nathaniel Kahlbaugh of Mahnomen / Waubun shot a 75 to hold a one-stroke lead after 18 holes. Dawson-Boyd shot one stroke better than United South Central to take the team lead. The Northland’s top individual is North Woods sophomore Spencer Viita, who shot 84.
- Detroit Lakes placed five girls in the top nine, including leader Sydney Busker (72), to take a commanding 33-shot lead in Class AA. Pequot Lakes junior Maggie Heggerston, who vaulted to fame with a girls’ state-record 62 in the Section 7AA meet, is tied for second with three others after shooting 73. International Falls senior Katie West topped Northland competitors with an 86 to tie for 30th.
- Northland girls struggled in the Class A tournament in Becker as all five Barnum golfers shot in triple digits to place eighth in the team event. BOLD holds a slim lead over Legacy Christian Academy and Fillmore Central in the team event.
