Third-ranked Virginia faces No. 4 Waseca in today's first round of the Minnesota Class A high school girls team tennis tournament at 8 a.m. at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis. They are the top returning teams from the 2009 tournament, as Waseca placed second and Virginia third.
Virginia (18-0), the Section 7 winner, defeated Rochester Lourdes 4-3 in the 2009 third-place match. The Blue Devils are in the state tournament for a fourth straight year.
The individual singles and doubles tournaments are Thursday and Friday.
Representing Section 7A in singles is Virginia junior Hailey Slatten, and in doubles are two Virginia teams, seniors Amanda Arbogast and Caley Westin, and senior Lexi Gunderson paired with junior Katie Kingston. From Section 7AA is Duluth East senior Annie Mahoney in singles and Greenway-Grand Rapids junior Michaela Cleveland and sophomore Kenzie Kane in doubles.

The visiting Spartans rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the Section 7A first-round matchup 20-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-13 behind 31 set assists from Leah Fillman.
Tower-Soudan 3, Wrenshall 0
Danielle Lenci had 13 kills as the Golden Eagles won the 7A first-round encounter in the school's final home match. Tower-Soudan's high school is closing next spring.
-- Cotton also won its final home match before the school consolidates with AlBrook next year with a 35-7, 25-15, 25-6 victory over Fond du Lac Ojibwe.
