Prep report: Superior falls in sectional boys basketball tourney

D.C. Everest ousted the Superior boys basketball team from the playoffs Thursday night, defeating them 54-35 in their Wisconsin Divisional 1, Sectional 1 game at Marshfield.

The Spartans (20-4) trailed 20-13 at halftime and edged the Evergreens 9-7 in the third quarter, but they were outscored 27-13 in the fourth.

Zach Finnegan led D.C. Everest (18-7) with 18 points, while Erick Tunell paced Superior with nine.

Duluth Denfeld 82, Duluth Marshall 37

Marquise Robinson sank four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points in the Hunters' home victory over the Hilltoppers.

Jamarr Harkins tallied 15 and Jerome Strother added 12 for Denfeld, while Cole Feriancek was Marshall's leading scorer with 14.

Cook County 56,

Floodwood 50, OT

Theresa Morrin scored 24 points and Breana Peterson chipped in 15 to lead the Vikings (11-14) to an overtime victory over the Polar Bears (12-15) in their Section 7A second-round game at Hermantown.

Floodwood, which handily defeated Cook County 84-54 on Feb. 8, led 25-18 at halftime, but the Vikings enjoyed a 30-23 second-half advantage and outscored the Polar Bears 8-2 in overtime.

Stacey Larva and Megan Aho led Floodwood with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Barnum 69, South Ridge 62, OT

Daron Mainville and Cheyanne Johnson combined for 42 points, but the Bombers (11-15) still needed overtime to slip past the Panthers (8-18) in their Section 7A second-round game in Esko.

Mainville scored 24, and Johnson added 18, while Mikayla Olesiak led South Ridge with 17.

Andover 79, Duluth East 49

Madi Hahn scored 25 points and the host Huskies pulled away with a 40-18 second-half run to defeat the Greyhounds in a Section 7AAAA first-round game.

Hannah Johnson scored 14 points to lead East (8-19).

Northland trio among

top defenseman finalists

Jake Bischoff of Grand Rapids, Meirs Moore of Duluth East and Jake Zeleznikar of Hermantown are among the 12 finalists announced Thursday for the inaugural Reed Larson Award, given to the top senior defenseman in Minnesota.

Bischoff had 22 points entering Thursday's Section 7AA final, where he faced off against Moore, the highest-scoring defenseman in the state with 47 points. Zeleznikar (11-34-45) leads the Hawks into tonight's Section 5A final against St. Cloud Cathedral.

The winner will be announced March 5.

FAILS TO QUALIFY

Three Northland divers finished at the bottom of the semifinal standings and did not qualify for Saturday's Class A finals at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Grand Rapids junior James Jylha, International Falls sophomore Cody Tatsak and Hibbing freshman Grayden Philbrick placed 16th through 18th, respectively.

Ott named to hall of fame

Former Deer River football coach Steve Ott is among the honorees named to the 2013 Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Ott will be inducted at 5 p.m. April 6 at the Doubletree Hotel in Minneapolis, along with Gene Stritesky of Ogilvie, Jerry Foley of Stillwater, Ivan Kroulik of Kasson-Mantorville, Jerry Carlson of Cambridge and Don Seipkes of Ottertail Central.
