Prep report: Softball tournament rainouts continue

Section 7AA and 7A play was washed out again Thursday, leaving Virginia, International Falls, Mesabi East and Mountain Iron-Buhl high and dry (or wet as the case may be) for the third consecutive day.

Those four teams have yet to play a playoff game, with the winners scheduled to play a doubleheader today. Virginia and International Falls meet at

1 p.m. today in a Section 7AA first-round game at Cohasset, with the winner to face Esko at 3.

Mesabi East players will hop on a bus at 8:15 a.m., barring unplayable fields at Braun Park in Cloquet, to play Mountain Iron-Buhl in a 7A first-round game at 11 a.m. The winner meets Silver Bay at 1 p.m. Silver Bay and Littlefork-Big Falls each have graduation tonight, so if rain continues to be a problem, play may need to carry through to Saturday.

Duluth Denfeld and Duluth East each had their 7AAA quarterfinal home games postponed until 4:30 p.m. today. The Hunters meet North Branch at Wade Field, and the Greyhounds attempt to get past Anoka to reach the double-elimination final four.

Track and Field

Falls sprints to the finish

Breanna Shofner of International Falls sprinted to titles in the 100 and 200 meters as the Broncos ran to first place Wednesday in the Section 7A North Subsection meet at Hibbing.

Virginia captured the boys team title. The top seven individual finishers and top four relays advance to next Friday's section meet at UMD.
