Prep report: Sheetz scores 35 points, leads 3-point barrage for Rebels

Teams combine on 28 3-pointers, including 18 by Moose Lake-Willow River.

Phillip Sheetz hit nine 3-pointers and scored 35 points as Moose Lake-Willow River raced to a 98-67 road win over Virginia in high school boys basketball Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021.

Logan Orvedahl added 27 points and added six 3-pointers as the teams combined on 28 3-pointers, including 18 by the Rebels (2-0).

Zane Lokken (13 points), Ethan Hanover (12) and Ryan Herbert (10) scored in double figures for the Blue Devils (0-2).

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Superior 59, Hermantown 56

Savannah Leopold hit four 3-pointers — including the game-winner with 24 seconds remaining — and scored 21 points to lead the host Spartans in their Lake Superior Conference opener.

Eva Peterson was also in double figures in scoring with 10 points and Emma Raye added nine for the Spartans (4-0 overall, 1-0 LSC).

Liv Berkeland hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead the Hawks (2-2, 0-1) while Jess Kukowski added nine points.

BOYS HOCKEY
Duluth Denfeld 5, Hibbing-Chisholm 0

Connor (two) and Cooper McClure scored three of the Hunters’ four goals in the third period, while goaltender Austin Wick posted a shutout on 21 saves as the Hunters blanked the Bluejackets at Hibbing Memorial Arena.

The Hunters (3-2) got assists from Simon Davidson on all five of their goals in their first game of the season played outside the Twin Cities.

Superior 6, Duluth Marshall 2

Robbie Powell’s shorthanded breakaway goal, his second of the game, was the first of three insurance goals the Spartans netted in the third period.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 6, North Shore 1

Dana Jones scored twice as the Lumberjacks ended a two-game winning streak with a victory in Two Harbors.

Proctor-Hermantown 7, Duluth 1

Morgan LaValley and Mya Gunderson scored their first varsity goals as the Mirage rolled to the win in Hermantown.
