Prep report: Peart’s goal lifts Thunderhawks over defending state champion Hill-Murray

Seventh-ranked Grand Rapids gets 20 saves from Pilkenton to edge sixth-ranked Pioneers.

Senior defenseman Jack Peart scored the winning goal 10:40 into the third period to give Grand Rapids a 2-1 nonconference victory over defending Class AA boys hockey champion Hill-Murray Saturday at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood, Minnesota.

The sixth-ranked Pioneers’ Jared Jensen and Thunderhawks’ Sam Sterle each scored power-play goals in the second period before Peart broke the deadlock.

Goaltender Wyatt Pilkenton made 20 saves for seventh-ranked Grand Rapids (4-0), which added a game against Class A fourth-ranked Duluth Denfeld at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Essentia Duluth Heritage Center.

Duluth Marshall 1, Greenway 1

The Hilltoppers’ Sam Anderson (39 saves) and Raiders’ Nathan Jurgansen (38) engaged in a goalies’ duel in a nonconference game at Coleraine.

Aden Springer scored the lone goal for Greenway, while Brendan Friday tallied 64 seconds later for Marshall (0-1-2).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cumberland 62, Northwestern 60

The Tigers got a good look at a 3-pointer in the closing seconds but their shot didn’t fall as the Beavers held on for the Heart O’ North Conference victory in Maple.

Defending league MVP Jack Martens had 25 points to lead Cumberland (6-5).

Junior guard Bennett Nelson had 24 points to lead Northwestern (10-6).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hermantown 73, Duluth East 65

Elly Schmitz led the way with 28 points as the host Hawks held off the Greyhounds for the second time in three days to improve to 3-0.

Four East players scored in double figures, led by Ashlynne Guenther’s 15 points.
