Northwestern's Kiernan Smith is in fourth place after Monday's opening day of the Wisconsin Division 2 girls golf state tournament at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
Smith started the two-day tournament by shooting a 7-over 79. She is five strokes behind leader Annie Balduzzi of Aquinas and one shot behind Grace Welch of Madison Edgewood and Clair Phakamad of Xavier, who are tied for second.
The tournament concludes with Round 2 this morning. Because of expected inclement weather, a shotgun start will be utilized, according to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.
