Mount Horeb connected on all five penalty kicks in a shootout and goalkeeper Maria Yanna stopped one of Ashland’s five attempts to defeat the Oredockers in a Wisconsin Division 3 high school girls soccer state tournament semifinal Thursday at Milwaukee.
The game remained scoreless through 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes overtime to set up the five-kicks-per-side shootout.
Yanna, who replaced starting goalie Natalie Wyss at halftime, stopped the first Ashland attempt and that turned out to be enough. Abby Epping sent the Vikings to today’s final with the game-winning shootout goal.
The Oredockers were making their third trip to the state tournament and second in a row.

BASEBALL
Three named all-state
Proctor’s Evan Scherber was named earlier this week to the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Class AA All-State team.
The senior shortstop is Proctor’s third such selection in as many years - joining Jake Lewis in 2012 and Ben Nelson in 2013.
Also earning All-State status were Ely’s Louie Gerzin and Floodwood’s Riley Bernsdorf in Class A.
Gerzin went 5-2 on the mound with a sub-2.00 ERA and was a lethal hitter for the Timberwolves, who qualified for the state tournament. Bernsdorf hit .625, drove in 15 runs and didn’t strike out for the second consecutive season.
