Hoium finished with a game-high 22 points for the Hawks (1-1, 1-0 Lake Superior Conference).

Leah Hamm scored 18 points for the Trojans (1-1, 0-1).

Barnum 96, Onamia 15

Jessica Newman scored 30 points and Katie Myhre scored 21 points and hit five 3-pointers as the defending Class A state champions improved to 2-0 with the nonconference road win.

Silver Bay 30

Megan Vidas outscored the host Mariners with 39 points as the Golden Bears cruised to a 62-13 halftime lead to win the nonconference game.

Boys basketball

Eastview 74, Duluth East 61

Joey King scored a game-high 28 points as second-ranked Eastview pulled away in the second half to win the season opener.

Johnny Woodard scored 27 points and hit four 3-pointers but picked up his fourth foul with 12 minutes to play, allowing the Lightning to put the game away.

Garrett Skrbich and Bo Gronseth each scored twice as the Hawks opened their season with a nonconference home rout.

Connor Lucas made 14 saves for the Hawks, who scored four goals in the first period.

Virginia-MIB 4, Little Falls 1

Garrett Hendrickson scored the first and last goals as the host Blue Devils evened their record at 1-1 with the nonconference win.

South St. Paul 5,

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 2

Ryan Sobaskiewicz and Steven Ward each scored two goals to lead the Packers to the nonconference win at Cloquet.

Grand Rapids' Kauppi elected

to MHCA Hall of fame

Former Grand Rapids coach Cliff Kauppi will join four others in being inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame next March.

Kauppi was known as the "Father of Grand Rapids hockey" for beginning the high school program and coaching from 1936-55. He later developed the youth system and was instrumental in establishing the IRA Civic Center in a six-decade long career.

Others being honored are former Rochester John Marshall coach Bob Frerker, formed South St. Paul coach and referee George Karn, Hopkins assistant coach Ron Sellnow and former Minnesota North Stars player, coach and general manager Lou Nanne.

The banquet will be held March 10, 2011 at the St. Paul RiverCentre.
