Preseason prep rankings came out Wednesday, and a pair of local squads found themselves atop their respective polls.

Hermantown is the preseason No. 1 in Class A boys hockey, according to the Let's Play Hockey poll. The Hawks were state tournament runners-up a year ago, falling to St. Thomas Academy in the title game. The Cadets have since moved up to Class AA.

Minnesota Basketball News has Esko as the preseason Class AA boys favorite a year after the Eskomos advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament. Esko boasts a wealth of returners, including high-scorers Casey Staniger, Marc Peterson and Kory Deadrick.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Duluth 7, Moose Lake Area 2

Alexia Klaas powered the Northern Stars to the road win Tuesday night by scoring four goals as Duluth improved to 3-1.

Klaas got the scoring started early in the first period, and the senior center added two more in a four-goal second for the Northern Stars. Klaas closed the scoring late in the third.

Callie Hoff added a goal and three assists for the visitors.

Sage Gerard and Asia Gobel scored for the Rebels (2-2).
