Ahead of tonight's high school football game between Esko and Two Harbors, the Esko Sports Alliance will recognize and honor Davis Helberg with a short on-field ceremony.

Helberg, a tireless community champion who was instrumental in starting Esko's sports hall of fame, is receiving home hospice care for the small-cell lung cancer he was diagnosed with last winter.

The 77-year-old is all but a household name in the Northland. His professional career included writing for the News Tribune and other regional publications, as well as serving as the longest-running director of Duluth's port. He also penned several books.

Helberg was born and raised in Esko.

Today's Northeast District game kicks off at 7 p.m.
