Duluth East junior Elliot Schneider qualified for the boys individual state tennis tournament on Tuesday by capturing the Section 7AA singles championship with a pair of victories in Elk River.
Schneider topped Elk River’s Zeke Delain in the semifinals 6-2, 7-6, to punch his ticket to state, then took the section title via a 6-1, 6-2 win over Elk River’s Tyler Creelman.
The day before, with Schneider at No. 1 singles, East qualified as a team for the Class AA state tournament, which will be played June 7-10 at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. The team competition gets underway June 7 while the singles tournament begins June 9.
East’s doubles duo of senior Max Bartell and junior Derek Boese lost in the section semifinals to Forest Lake’s Hunter Shortly and Cole Emily 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and then finished fourth after losing to Forest Lake’s Noah Alm and Ben Bowes.
Grand Rapids-Greenway junior Ian Pallin finished fourth in singles after losses to Creelman and Delain.

Hermantown leads 7AA meet
Hermantown holds a one-stroke lead over Eveleth-Gilbert after the first round of the Section 7AA tournament at the Quarry at Giants Ridge.
The Hawks totaled 332 strokes Tuesday, led by Zac Joki’s 77 and Dylan Samberg’s 78. Virginia’s Anthony Ahrens leads after posting a first-round 75.
The second and final round is Thursday at Giants Ridge.
The 7AA girls take to the same course for the opening round today.
