McKenzie Nelson scored nine minutes into the game and goalkeeper Anna Mayer made five saves to lead Duluth East to a 2-0 victory over No. 1-ranked Rosemount on Saturday at Ordean Stadium, giving the Greyhounds the Great Northern Invitational title for the first time.

Nelson, who missed half of the 2016 season with a leg injury, scored for the second consecutive game and the Meredith Hill finished off a Gracie Butchart cross in the second half to close the scoring against last year's Class AA runners-up and give East a 2-0 record for the first time in 17 years.

Chisago Lakes 1, Duluth Marshall 0

Tess Cody's second-half goal was all the Wildcats needed to edge the Hilltoppers in a key Section 7A game in Lindstrom, Minn.

Duluth East 6, Blaine 1

The Greyhounds continued their impressive start to the season as Sean Brueninghaus scored twice in a four-goal first half at Ordean Stadium.

Ryan Johnston added a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds, who have outscored their first two foes 11-2.

Duluth Denfeld 2, North Branch 1

Freshman Keegan Chastey assisted on Caden Rathke's goal and then scored nine minutes later as the Hunters held on to the nonconference road win.

Denfeld goalkeeper Eric Gibson made five saves.

Ashland 22, Hayward 14

Justin Miller rushed for 133 yards on 22 carries and scored a touchdown as the Oredockers won at Hayward on Friday night despite completing just one pass.

Zachary Coffland added 75 yards rushing as Ashland accumulated 273 yards on the ground.

Ashland's Brennan Corbine totaled 15 tackles.
